Character Development Training (CDT) Trainer 2023

In August 2023 I served as a trainer for Character Development Training Institut Teknologi Bandung (CDT ITB). It was my first time on an official event committee.

What is CDT?

CDT is a training that ITB requires every freshman to complete. It teaches the basic character traits needed to survive the demanding environment of university life. A freshman who skips the event or finishes with a poor final score must retake it the following year.

Freshmen are called trainees, and the people who teach them are called trainers. Trainers are senior students who go through several selection rounds and special training before they are chosen, and I was one of them.

Materials taught

CDT teaches AIR ITB, the core character ITB wants every student to have. AIR stands for Adaptif (Adaptability), Integritas (Integrity), and Rendah hati (Humility).

1. Adaptability is the ability to adjust to the surrounding environment. Every student comes from a different background, and without this ability they struggle in daily university life, which can hurt their academic performance.

2. Integrity means being honest and holding firmly to strong moral and ethical principles. For example, students should never cheat in exams or tests. It also means refusing to continue bad cultures such as nepotism and corruption once they leave campus.

3. Humility means being modest and knowing the limits of one's own abilities. It matters at ITB because many students are among the best in their schools, and that can make them boastful or dismissive of others. Teaching students to stay modest is part of the training.

Closing

This was a new experience full of challenges and learning. Although I would not do it again, I gained a lot from taking part, and it remains a memorable one.
